Athletic Philosophy

The mission of George Washington Academy (GWA) Athletic Department is to ensure student learning using the basic principles of athletics: team work, discipline, sportsmanship and civility. Building a winning program is an inherent goal of athletic competition, but we believe this is best accomplished by developing strong character in our student-athletes. Each staff member is committed to helping every athlete reach his or her potential in the classroom as well as in the playing arena. The self-confidence and life lessons learned through participation in GWA interscholastic athletic programs will better prepare our student-athletes for graduation and success in all of their post-secondary school endeavors.

GWA will be a leader in interscholastic athletics. The Athletic Department aspires to be recognized locally and regionally for athletic and academic excellence and the personal development of our student-athletes.
GWA envisions a program of character, integrity and high respect within interscholastic athletics, while building a tradition as a winning program. GWA athletics will continue to build a reputation of graduating academically superior athletes, role models, and future leaders.

WE BELIEVE: that interscholastic athletics are an integral part of a school’s curriculum.
WE BELIEVE: that participation in a wide variety of interscholastic sports programs contributes positively toward the development of a young person’s health, physical ability, social competence and discipline.
WE BELIEVE: that the experience of rigorous interscholastic athletic competition contributes significantly toward the emotional and moral stability of our young people.
WE BELIEVE: in providing a well-balanced and organized program of interscholastic athletics for girls and boys, and in managing and operating this program within the guidelines and policies of GWA and the Board of Directors.
