This feature highlights the impressive impact of the Valentine's Day Bouskoura Forest clean-up, a service project coordinated and initiated by Ghita Mikou, Mahi Singh, and Ilyas Baroudi, three of the first GWA students scheduled to graduate next school year, in the first cohort of GWA’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.  An essential component of the IBDP is Community, Activity, and Service (CAS) experiences.  During this service project, the crew of 40 volunteers collected 100 bags of trash in a zone of approximately 2 square kilometers.  Natasha realized that “the reason there is so much trash in the forest is because of the enormous lack of trash cans.”  Their next service project might change that.  Continue reading for a full report of the clean-up day by organizer Ghita Mikou, as well as the roots of the project and the goal moving forward.  

 

“Love is in the air, but the air is highly polluted”-Amit Abraham

This quote is highly apt considering the recent initiative that took place on Valentines day. On February 14, a group of George Washington Academy CAS students partnered with the ACCV Bicycle Club to participate in the Go Green with Love event. Our main goal during this experience was to give back to the Bouskoura community by picking up trash and making the environment a better place. Upon arrival, every student got a pair of gloves and a couple trashbags in order to be well equipped for the walk ahead. The forest clean-up was thoroughly eye-opening for numerous reasons, mainly because of how much we disregard the large impact that takes place when pollution occurs. My group and I managed to fill up three whole bags of garbage which was a fraction of the trash in the forest.  However, there are impending future plans to conduct another clean-up that would possibly focus on preventing the garbage build-up in the forest. 

The protection and preservation of nature is our mission which means that hopefully, this initiative will move to other heavily polluted and littered areas in Casablanca, including beaches and or rural areas. Although this event was important to everyone who was involved, I personally found this experience to be extremely fulfilling because it felt rewarding to be part of a community that gave back to nature. We decided to start with the Bouskoura forest because of the vast natural area that we had access to and primarily for the people who wanted to bike and pick up trash at the same time. Many joggers and families come to the forest to exercise or for picnics and leave a surprising amount of garbage behind which is also a reason for why we chose the forest for our first environment clean-up. Finally, we chose to hold this event on Valentines day to showcase our love for nature and the community that was involved. We wanted to take some time to appreciate the beautiful nature surrounding us in order to show love and gratitude to our Mother Earth.

La Saint Valentin Passe au Vert à GWA

 

Cet article souligne le formidable impact qu’a eu l’événement Nettoyage de la Forêt de Bouskoura, à l’occasion de la Saint-Valentin. Il s’agit d’un projet de service initié et coordonné par Ghita Mikou, Ilyas Baroudi et Mai Singh, trois élèves de la première promotion de GWA à sortir diplômée du Programme du Diplôme du Baccalauréat International l’année prochaine. Une composante essentielle de l’IBDP est l’expérience Communauté, Activité et Service (CAS). Lors de cette action de service, l’équipe de nettoyage composée de 40 volontaires a rempli une centaine de sacs de déchets, sur une zone d’environ deux kilomètres carrés. Natasha a réalisé que “la raison pour laquelle il y a tant de déchets dans la forêt est parce que le site manque considérablement de poubelles.”  Leur prochain projet de service pourrait être de remédier à cela. “Il y a de l’amour dans l’air, mais l’air est fortement pollué”-Amit Abraham

Cette citation est particulièrement appropriée si l’on considère la récente initiative qui a eu lieu le jour de la Saint Valentin. Le 14 février dernier, un groupe d’élèves de George Washington Academy, en partenariat avec le Club Casablancais de VTT, a participé à l’événement “Go Green with Love”. L’objectif principal de cette action était de tendre la main à la communauté de Bouskoura en ramassant les déchets de la forêt et en mettant en valeur l’environnement. A leur arrivée, chaque élève s’est vu remettre une paire de gants et quelques sacs poubelles, équipement nécessaire pour la suite des opérations. Le nettoyage de la forêt fut une véritable prise de conscience pour de nombreuses raisons, principalement parce que nous ignorons l’ampleur des répercussions de la pollution. Mon groupe et moi-même avons rempli trois sacs de déchets, mais cela ne représente qu’une infime fraction des détritus dans la forêt. De futurs et imminents projets de nettoyage de la forêt sont en préparation ; il s’agirait également de communiquer sur la manière d’éviter l’accumulation des déchets dans la forêt.

La protection et la conservation de la nature sont notre mission, ce qui signifie, nous l’espérons, que cette initiative se poursuivra vers d’autres zones sales et polluées de Casablanca, ce qui inclut les plages et/ou certaines zones rurales. Toutes les personnes impliquées ont trouvé cette initiative importante ; j’ai personnellement trouvé cette expérience véritablement épanouissante parce que je trouve cela gratifiant de faire partie d’une communauté qui agit pour la nature. Nous avons décidé de commencer par la forêt de Bouskoura car c’est une vaste étendue de nature facilement accessible d’une part, et car cela permettait aux cyclistes de faire du vélo et nettoyer la forêt en même temps. De nombreux joggers et de nombreuses familles viennent en forêt pour faire du sport ou pique-niquer, et laissent une quantité impressionnante d’ordures derrière eux. C’est également une des raisons pour laquelle nous avons choisi la forêt pour notre première action de nettoyage. Enfin, nous avons organisé l’événement le jour de la Saint Valentin afin de montrer à tous notre lien étroit avec la nature et mettre à l’honneur la communauté qui a participé à cette aventure. Nous souhaitions prendre le temps nécessaire pour apprécier la beauté qui nous entoure et remercier notre Mère Nature.
