Lower School Food Drive for Local Down Syndrome Center

The Lower School food drive is promoted through the GWA character education program and is in support of a local Down Syndrome Center. The Lower School is collecting non-perishable food items until their next Character Assembly on April 5th.

Lower School Counselor, Jessica Cumbers, said the food drive encourages GWA students to see beyond themselves and to appreciate the needs of our community. Our character trait for the month of March is Fairness. Ms. Cumbers explained that the character education program teaches our students “about how fairness is not everyone having the same thing, but getting what they need to be successful. So our helping to provide food for the Down syndrome schools is helping supply them with what they need to succeed.”

Members of the Student Character Team (pictured above and below) added non-perishable food items to the collection boxes at GWA. The Student Character Team is made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who have completed an application process and want to make a difference at home, at school, in the community, and in the world. They are expected to show excellent character to the rest of the student body and act as role models that others can follow.

When asked how they felt about the food drive, members of the Student Character Team explained, “It feels good to give things away for a good cause,” “It’s fun to help other people,” and that they “know they’re helping other children in need.”
