STELOS is a program created by GWA Kindergarten teacher Sara Hutson in 2016. The program allows GWA students from 2nd grade through 12th grade to volunteer their time on a Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM to tutor English to our staff’s children. Most of these children attend public schools around Casablanca. Tutoring at STELOS looks different than you may expect. English is taught through games, LEGOs, songs, yoga, sports, and art. All of this wondrous teaching and learning takes place right here at GWA. This really makes it an easy way to serve others in the community.
There is exciting momentum as George Washington Academy moves forward to become an International Baccalaureate authorized school*. The administration has filled all 11 IB teaching positions at GWA, with each teacher committing to a multi-year contract. Below is a personal update from each of our IB teachers, sharing why they are excited to teach IB at GWA and how they are already implementing IB teaching and learning strategies in the classroom. GWA’s final IB Verification Visit will occur in September, after which GWA will obtain authorization and officially be able to offer the IB Diploma Program to 11th and 12th grade students. This year’s 9th grade class will be the first students eligible to earn both a GWA diploma and an IB diploma.

In late January, three GWA teachers collaborated to stage a reinterpreted performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The full-length play also included new, original scenes written by 9th grade students.

George Washington Academy is a candidate school for the IB Diploma Programme.* We hope to begin offering IB courses in the fall of 2020, and while this may seem far away, GWA teachers and administrators already this school year have started the hard work of preparing to receive authorization.
Elections for the Most Important Organelle have become an annual tradition at GWA. At the beginning of November, Ms. Sando’s 9th grade Biology classes present their candidate organelles and work to persuade their classmates to vote for them. This year produced even more excitement as voting opened up to the whole school!
On November 1st, a group of 5th grade students held a bake sale to raise money for charity. The girls came up with the idea for the bake sale all on their own, and worked with the GWA administration to create a successful fundraiser.
