Visual Arts

Upper School

Students may choose from several art electives. Fundamentals of Art emphasizes vocabulary, history and concepts and the use of various media and tools. Students use dry and wet media and are encouraged to develop their own styles and abilities. Students will analyze and critique artwork, discuss aesthetic issues, and understand the connections between art, history and culture. In Drawing and Painting, students use dry and wet media techniques to create original two-dimensional artwork.

Students express themselves through the themes of observation, still life, figure, portrait, landscape, and a student-selected conceptual theme.

In Visual Communications, students will explore visual art as it applies to commercial art. Students learn and utilize composition, layout and typography basics, and create original projects such as posters, magazine ads and pages, book design, illustration and logo creation.
