Adopted School, Moulay Thami
Moulay Thami is a few kilometers away from GWA, but a world away in terms of opportunity and all the benefits that come with money and privilege. This year, GWA’s lower school is committed to helping to bridge the gap by transforming this village school into a well-equipped and beautiful place to learn.
Moulay Thami is a few kilometers away from GWA, but a world away in terms of opportunity and all the benefits that come with money and privilege. This year, GWA’s lower school is committed to helping to bridge the gap by transforming this village school into a well-equipped and beautiful place to learn. Lower School teacher and charity committee member, Tanya Pope introduces us to Moulay Thami and the transformation plans for this school year.
“My name is Tanya Pope and I am only a very small part of a wonderful group of teachers including Madame Khadija Houbi and Mr. Andrew Clement that work together with the character team at the Elementary School here at GWA. Our project this year is to transform our adopted school, Moulay Thami. This project is directly aligned with GWA’s mission of building character and becoming a global citizen, serving Morocco by showing compassion and honoring cultural diversity through a life-changing charitable act."
"Moulay Thami is a village school located between Dar Bouazza and Had Swalem. It is a school that I first visited with many others about a month ago. The school has staff and students that are humble and grateful for all they have been given in this life. In fact, as I made my way from one room to another meeting the teachers and the students, I asked them, “how could GWA students help you?” Many of them had a hard time answering as they were very shy. After a few minutes, one little girl in a 2nd-grade classroom raised her hand and said, “I would love to have curtains.” Imagine a child who is 8 years old, asking for something so simple? When I heard this from her, I just knew the students here at GWA had an opportunity to embrace the reality of what a global citizen truly looks like. They could see first-hand what working together could do for others."
Moulay Thami is a public school with 400 plus students between K4 and 6th grade. The plan and desire are that each month we will focus on a need that the school currently has, and we are committed to work as a team to help create a better learning environment for the students who attend the school. The school needs paint, curtains, playground equipment, books, school supplies, and educational tools to help the students learn.
The parents can support this effort by helping monthly with 10 DH for their children to casual dress, donating school supplies, and going through old French or Arabic books and donating what their child may not be reading any longer.
Parents can also discuss with their children how important it is to work as a community to help others who might not be as fortunate as they are.
We appreciate each student who desires to participate in this yearlong project that will certainly help so many…”Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much”. Helen Keller~
5th-graders have already raised 2,503 MAD for Moulay Thami. Click here to let us know if you can offer additional support.
