Considerations Per Grade

All new students must submit all the required application documents, complete grade appropriate test and given a review by the Admissions Review Team. The goal of the review is to use relevant information, in order to make an informed decision about a child’s likelihood of success at GWA.

Evidence/data for making an admission determination may be gained from:

1. Information provided on application
2. Previous GWA records
3. Parent-provided records
4. Current school-provided records
5. Phone or e-mail communication between schools
6. Student/family interview

The factors to be considered may include:

Student:
Previous grades
Stanford Achievement Test (or other recent standardized/nationally normed test)
English speaking, reading and writing proficiency
Mathematical proficiency
Work ethic/attitude
Behavioral/disciplinary history
Learning disabilities/issues
Attendance records
Recommendations from previous school(s)
Evidence of current/very recent enrollment in a comparable school/equivalent program

GWA:
Current class composition
Number of currently enrolled students with complex needs
Current teacher capacity

Lower School expectations for placement:

Nursery No language requirements.
Discovery No English required. Students must demonstrate age appropriate oral language skills in their home language.
Pre-K Some oral English exposure is expected. Students should demonstrate age appropriate oral language skills in their home language.
Kinder Some oral English exposure is expected (English Summer Camp or regular exposure) Students should know 50% of the letters & sounds in English or French.
1st Students need to be able to follow instructions and express themselves. Students need to know their letters and sounds in English or French. Students should show grade level numeracy skills.
2nd-3rd
Students must have receptive and expressive English oral skills. Students must be able to read and write (within 6 months of grade level) in either English or French. Students should show grade level numeracy skills.
4th-5th
Students must have receptive and expressive English oral skills. Students must be able to read and write (within 1 year of grade level) in English. Students should show grade level numeracy skills.

Middle School (Grades 6-8) Grade level placement determinations are based on:

Most recent grade level attended
Current developmental level of student
Age as of September 1 (as identified below)

High School (Grades 9-12) Grade level placement determinations are based on:

Current number of transferable credits (as identified in official transcript)
Age and credit requirements as of September 1 (as identified below)
